Frida d’Armand was set to live an uneventful life.
The youngest daughter of Duke Richard d’Armand, she was born in the rich Duchy d’Armand, a client kingdom of the Holy Kingdom of Lohander—a land of great beauty, plentiful harvests, art, and poetry.
She was expected to prosper in quiet splendor, marrying a scion of some noble family and spending her days raising a household in luxury. But that was not meant to be.
Her father, Richard, was betrayed by his brother, who told Emperor Calcas of the Holy Kingdom of Lohander about his plans to secede from the empire.
Calcas had Richard executed. Frida’s mother was forced to flee by sea with Frida and her brothers and sisters. A pirate attack brought death to Frida’s family, followed by her capture and enslavement.
After many dark years of bondage, she escaped right on the cusp of adulthood.
Driven by rage for all she had lost and the torment she had suffered, she lived more in the next seven years than most people did in a lifetime. She rose through the ranks of a mercenary company, becoming feared and respected. Then, she embarked on a rampage of vengeance against those who had tormented her in youth.
After much blood had been spilled, her lust for vengeance sated but her wounded soul unhealed, she sought meaning and the means to earn back her father’s crown. She acquired a ship and began amassing a fortune as a pirate, preying upon merchant vessels in the waters around the land of her birth.
So relentless was she that, within two years, she had earned the title of Pirate Queen of the Circle Sea, and become one of the Lohanian authorities’ most wanted criminals.
But when magic began to return to Elessia and the goddess of frost and death laid siege to the north, Frida was caught in the wake of that war, and it took its toll.
At its end, whatever fortune she had amassed was gone. She had lost her ship, her crew, and even the man she loved. She was farther than ever from possessing the means to reclaim the title her uncle had stolen from her.
She sank into despair, drinking herself numb in the coastal city of Duskport.
But fate was not done with Frida d’Armand.
Character Traits
Frida is a highly intelligent, resourceful fighter. Though her strength is uncommon for her petite build, born of years of harsh training and time spent at the forge during captivity, she relies upon speed and wit in battle.
She is ambidextrous, often wielding a blade in each hand. She is most comfortable with twin scimitars but is proficient with all manner of one-handed swords and daggers.
She is observant, with a keen eye that takes in the whole of a dangerous situation at a glance. She can develop and alter plans under pressure. Yet her tactical mind is often overwhelmed by her brash intensity. An extremely physical person, her default in the face of any challenge is action, motion. Too often, she lacks the patience to think matters through and chooses to charge ahead, placing her faith in the gods’ hands.
Not that she believes in the gods. After all she has endured, she uses Lohander’s name as a curse. Yet, like most who have spent years at sea, she remains superstitious to a degree.
She is spiteful and vengeful, believing in an eye for an eye, yet she will go out of her way to protect the innocent. Despite her infamy as a pirate, she avoided harming women, children, and the elderly, targeting ships tied to the Lohanian imperial family and to her uncle.
At the beginning of her piratical career, she met Silas Magnus, who worked for a noble patron in the southern islands in search of the treasure of a lost kingdom. They developed an intense rivalry as they raced for the prize, and over years of bitter clashes, that rivalry blossomed into love and desire.
Until Silas vanished amid the northern war.
