Someone who wants something from you tells you what you want to hear.
Someone who loves you tells you what you need to hear.
It sounds obvious, I know; yet as a social practice, it fell to disuse. Increasingly, it seems we are afraid to offend – to hurt.
But true friends know that if they hurt, they will eventually be forgiven.
On the other hand, if they let a person who is important to them keep in error – perhaps to irreparable harm – they will not be able to forgive themselves.
