I love doing interviews. It’s not my art of choice – it’s not writing – but it’s a lot of fun, talking to smart people who have unique things to teach.

But in my last interview, I lost control. Suddenly my guest began to ask me questions. Not as a way of generating conflict – just out of curiosity.

I try to make all my interviews conversational, not just a sequence of predetermined questions. But this was different. I guess that my guest is a person with an uncommon capacity for empathy.

The best thing is to listen, to hear. But sometimes it feels good to meet someone who genuinely wants to hear us.
